Last Saturday, Trinity students danced at Lush Rooftop as part of a Gamma Chi Delta fundraiser for the San Antonio nonprofit Camp CAMP which provides an accessible and fun summer camp experience for children and adults with disabilities. Attire was semi-formal and drinks were available for students over 21. According to Samantha Lee, a senior Gamma member, the Gammas were able to raise over $6,000 to benefit Camp CAMP by selling about 319 tickets.

This is the third year that the sorority has held a concert to benefit Camp CAMP (Children’s Association for Maximum Potential).

Camp CAMP aims to make summer camp accessible for people who were often not accepted by traditional camp programs due to medical conditions and disabilities. The CAMP summer camp program combines activities such as swimming, horseback riding and crafts with accommodations such as climate controlled cabins, wheelchair accessibility and a team of trained camp counselors to provide a welcoming experience.

Lee organized and planned this year’s Concert for CAMP and said she has a personal connection with the nonprofit.

“I’ve worked with [Camp CAMP] since I was a sophomore in high school, and it’s something [that] I really love,” Lee said. “They [empower] everyone to feel equal because we’re more the same than different. I think that’s their motto on their signs, and it’s just something that’s full of equality and love.”

All of the money that the Gammas raised through the benefit concert will go toward Camp CAMP.

“Basically, what we’re doing is raising money to give people who come to Camp CAMP scholarships [to go],” said Alex Duncan, senior Gamma.

In the two previous years that the Gammas hosted this philanthropic event, the Concert for CAMP was at a country dance hall called The Well, and the concert had a country music theme. This year, the concert was held at Lush Rooftop.

Throughout the night, Quantum — the DJ hired for the concert — played a variety or songs, ranging from older pop hits like “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls and “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” by Celine Dion to more contemporary songs like “Stronger” by Kanye West, “I Like It” by Cardi B and “Freaky Friday” by Lil Dicky.

“I try to do a mix of everything, whatever the crowd is feeling: some house, some rap, some techno, some of everything,” Quantum said.

Attendees like Britney Sullivan, a Trinity graduate student enrolled in the Masters of Science in Accounting program, enjoyed the concert’s overall atmosphere as well as its philanthropic roots.

“The Concert for CAMP has been great so far. I think it’s an amazing cause, and I’m just happy to be out here to support it,” Sullivan said.
