On April 22, the Trinity community came together at the Magic Stones to celebrate Earth Day through a campus market. Walking past the stones, two students handed out toothpicks and cardboard tubs of fresh fruit. Past them, tables were filled with local crochet vendors, free plants and Trinity green clubs like the Trinity Bee Club and Trinity Community Garden.
The first-ever Earth Day market was hosted by the campus-wide sustainability committee. Avery Lee Parks, sophomore international business and economics double-major, is a student representative for the campus sustainability committee and worked on getting the vendors and food for this event.
Parks said she was enthusiastic to bring this kind of event to the Trinity community and hopes that it will continue to thrive in the future.
“I am just so excited that we’re bringing something that I really care about — environmental awareness and sustainability — into the spotlight of Trinity,” Parks said. “And I’m really excited to eat this fruit cup and put this plant in my room.”
Kathryn Guerra, first-year biology major, attended the event. She joined in on the activities present at the event, bringing home a pack of free seeds with her.
“I like the flowers. I want to try and get better at growing plants, so I got a bunch of seeds to try. And then I got to paint a rock, which is cool, and I’m going to find a nice spot for it,” Guerra said.
Humans have a large impact on the environment, so it is important to be conscious of how people affect it, Guerra said.
