With a campus as small as Trinity’s, faces become familiar — especially when there are two of them. Originally from Houston, sophomore twins Giovanny “Gio” and Angello Martinez take advantage of Trinity’s different opportunities.
While Gio and Angello may look identical, their interests and career paths look vastly different. Gio came into Trinity with an interest in business, but after consulting with a Trinity student he decided it would be best to pursue a degree in accounting. Angello, on the other hand, is passionate about pursuing a career in engineering, and is currently majoring in engineering with a minor in math.
Gio lives by a work hard, play hard mentality. After joining Trinity fraternity Chi Delta Tau, Gio has been able to take advantage of Trinity’s social scene.
“I think it’s fun. I think the reason why I do it that much is because like, I do like to, I work a lot,” Gio said. “I study a lot Monday through Thursday and then Friday to Saturday, it’s all fun.”
Gio is a double-major in business, analytics and technology and accounting. For Gio, the prospects and job security provided by a degree like accounting led him down his current path. Gio was persistent when applying for an internship with a Big Four accounting firm. After a series of emails attempting to secure a position, Gio interviewed and secured a five-week position at Deloitte, where he was able to experience the day-to-day life of an accountant.
“I think two days later they called me and then they told me that I got the position, ecstatic, you know, top of the world,” Gio said. “And then, I had my summer at Deloitte for five weeks. It was pretty cool.”
In contrast to his brother, Angello spends the little free time he gets away from his studies taking time for himself.
“I’d rather just chill in my room, watch some anime, just like, hang out with myself to be honest,” Angello said. “I’m not really active like that.”
The biggest lesson Angello has learned while at Trinity, a lesson which has helped him combat academic stress, is simply asking for help when needed. While Angello may not have always been confident asking for help, he finds it beneficial now to use the resources provided.
“I used to be ashamed of asking for help, to be honest,” Angello said. “But now I really don’t care. You’ll catch me mostly during office hours ‘cause I like to get it from the professor, cause the professor knows how to teach, you know?”
Even despite financial obstacles, Gio and Angello understand that at their core, the hard work they put into everything they do will pay off. Gio and Angello work for a better future for not only themselves, but also their family.
“Working hard is going to pay off. I mean, for me it is. I know for sure,” Angello said. “Working hard for a better future. Yeah. Working hard to retire my mom. Basically, for me, that is the end goal.”
