Beyond supporting the Tigers at home games, you can become involved with college athletics in a number of ways. Opportunities exist to play club and intramural sports with other students. Additionally, there are employment opportunities in the athletics department for students workers to fill a number of jobs. It takes a team of people working behind the scenes in different areas to allow athletics events to happen, that you can be a part of.
Intramural Sports
Trinity’s intramurals give students a chance to get exercise in a low-stakes environment, while also allowing them to socialize with their peers. In intramural sports, Trinity students form teams to compete against one another, with games usually occurring once or twice a week in on-campus locations. Intramural sports have a more relaxed atmosphere and do not require extensive commitment from participants.
This makes intramurals a popular activity among the student body, as they fit most student’s busy schedules. Trinity has multiple intramural sports to choose from, including flag football, volleyball, basketball, soccer and others.
For more information on the sign-up process, please visit Trinity’s intramurals website or stop by the Rec Sports’ office on the second floor of the Bell Center in room 214 from 12pm to 5pm.
Club Sports
Club sports provide students with a bridge between competitive sports and intramurals. While it can vary by club, students have the opportunity to represent Trinity by competing against other schools. Trinity has many club sports options, including, but not limited to, soccer, volleyball, ultimate frisbee and swimming.
Club sports often practice multiple times a week and have opportunities for students to travel with their teammates to games and tournaments, though this can vary depending on the team. Many teams also give new players a chance to sign up and try out a new sport to see how much they like it and how much time they want to commit to it. Commitment levels vary within the team, with most events not being mandatory for participants.
Regardless of how busy someone’s schedule is, there is likely a club sports option that fits it. For more information, check out the Club Sports Handbook and be sure to attend the Student Involvement Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. on upper campus.
Student Work in Athletics
For those who are interested in sports, but not necessarily in playing them, Trinity’s athletics department has many opportunities for student workers. The jobs can vary from completing day-to-day tasks in the Bell Center to keeping statistics at games, depending on the department.
Trinity’s Sports Information Department, housed on the third floor of the Bell Center, employs student workers for graphic design, photography and other responsibilities. Many of these tasks give students the opportunity to work at sporting events on campus, preparing them for future careers in the sports information field.
Tiger Network, the university’s sports broadcasting network, provides another opportunity for students to work in sports. The network offers multiple roles for students interested in sports media, both behind the scenes and the microphone. Broadcasts are almost entirely student-run and give people interested in exploring sports broadcasting a safe space to try it out.
