Sidewalk Symposium: A not so Cruel Summer

Students share the impact Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour made on their summer.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour made its monumental debut in March 2023. The landmark performance commemorating each of Swift’s 10 albums or “eras” amassed a historic audience that took pop culture by storm. With three performances each week, totaling 38 performances, the Eras Tour made history this summer as the highest-grossing tour, surpassing Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road.”

The Trinitonian asked students around Coates Library and Coates Student Center about the impact the Eras Tour made on their summer.

Nathalia Fernandez, junior neuroscience major
Where did you see the Eras tour?
“I saw it in Houston.”
What was the most unexpected moment of the tour?
“Probably the surprise songs. They were ‘Begin Again’ and ‘Wonderland.’”
Did you keep up with the tour after you saw the show?
“I did. I would keep up with it.”
Did you dress up for the concert?
“I did a ‘Lover’ and ‘Speak Now’ mixture.”
Did the Eras tour shape/define your summer?
“Even after the concert I listened to my concert playlist. And when ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)’ came out I listened to that on repeat. I think I became more of a fan after the concert even though I was pretty much a Swiftie before.”

Mirella Marshall, first-year psychology major.
Where did you see the Eras tour?
“In Houston.”
What was the most unexpected moment of the tour?
“When she first came out and sang ‘Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince.”’
Did you keep up with the tour after you saw the show?
“Yes, I watched it on TikTok.”
Did the Eras tour shape/define your summer?
“It was a very Taylor Swift summer, especially with the release of ‘Speak Now (Taylor’s Version).’”

Cassidy Maclean, sophomore psychology and political science double-major
Where did you see the Eras tour?
“In Houston.”
What was the most unexpected moment of the tour?
“Her surprise songs because I didn’t know them that well.”
What were your surprise songs?
“‘Today Was a Fairytale,’ and ‘A Place in this World.’”
Did you keep up with the tour after you saw the show?
“A little bit on TikTok, but no because I didn’t want to know the other, better surprise songs.”
What is your favorite era?
“1989.”
Did the Eras tour shape/define your summer?
“Yes, because she dropped many significant pieces, and it made me so much happier.”

Vanessa Garcia, first-year biology major
Where did you see the Eras tour?
“In Arlington, Texas.”
What was the most unexpected moment of the tour?
“I only got one surprise song, so that was unexpected.”
Did you keep up with the tour after you saw the show?
“Yes, I would watch the livestream when they were on TikTok.”
What is your favorite era?
“Probably Fearless.”
Did the Eras tour shape/define your summer?
“Yes, with the Eras Tour you got all the different eras. You could apply it to your entire summer especially as a freshman coming into college. I guess all the eras of my life really resonated with me.”

Bailey Silverman, sophomore political science and psychology double-major
What was the most unexpected moment of the tour?
“I listened to the setlist in advance but I forgot the order of the eras so anytime she transitioned to a new era it was really fun.”
Did you keep up with the tour after you saw the show?
“If I happened to be up I would go on the livestreams to listen to the surprise songs.”
What is your favorite era?
“‘Folklore’, but my second favorite is ‘Reputation.’”
Did the Eras tour shape/define your summer?
“I listened to a lot of Taylor Swift over the summer and I watched the live streams. It was a very Taylor Swift-themed summer for me.”
