After years of petitions, course evaluation comments and at least one Change.org campaign, Trinity has officially approved a film studies major. Beginning this fall, every student can do what they’ve always dreamed of: declare a major in film studies.
Batrick Peating, chair of the department, announced the addition of the major on March 14. It comes alongside a series of curricular changes designed to “support interdisciplinary film literacy” (in keeping with the university’s woke, liberal arts agenda).
The new major will be available during fall 2026 registration this April. Peating said students are also reminded that the annual summer viewing log is due Aug. 9. This year’s theme is: ‘These ‘Superbad’ ‘(88) Days of Summer’ movies will give you ‘Jokers’ ‘Whiplash’!
The creation of the major responds directly to sustained student interest in expanding the existing minor, which has historically offered a limited course catalog and few upper-division options, administrators shared. To premiere the major, the university has included the following interdisciplinary courses in film studies, for all students to enjoy:
- ECON 1310: “The Tiger of Wall Street,” an introduction to economic theory through depictions of markets and frequent field trips to snow slopes.
- SOCI 2335: “Electric Scooter Driver,” a sociological study of campus mobility through film representation.
- BIOL 1402: “Parasite,” a biological sciences course that is, according to the catalog, “not actually about parasites when you think about it.”
“Forget being globally aware or learning about the social sciences,” Peating said. “Why do that when you could have the vocabulary to mansplain ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ or recite Patrick Bateman monologues from memory?”
The major’s announcement came alongside the debut of “Triniboxd,” a Trinity-specific adaptation of the popular movie-reviewing platform Letterboxd. Bill Kill*, sophomore film studies major and president of ‘The Royal Trinibaums’ club, provided input during the development of Triniboxd.
“This is a strong step for the humanities,” Kill said. “Film studies are crucial to building cultural awareness and interpretive skills. And students now finally have a space to debate whether Margot Robbie or Uma Thurman has the superior foot-centric filmography.”
The Triniboxd platform allows students to log films, curate top-four lists and participate in discussion-based forums linked to the anonymous social media app Jizz. Developers in Trinity IT say the goal is to “centralize film discourse” and “empower the film bro demographic.”
Anita Moovey, treasurer of The Fast and the Furriest, Trinity’s pro-furry film club, said the platform offers a structured alternative to existing social media spaces.
“With all the drama on Jizz, why shouldn’t we accept a new, Trinity-backed social media platform?” Moovey said. “People’s ratings give students a way to share their perspectives and engage in paw-sitive film discourse.”
Film studies remains a single major, for now. Some departments have already proposed overhauls for film-based electives, and discussions are underway about additional interdisciplinary pathways.
*Kill acknowledged that his father’s donations to Trinity may have helped “accelerate” the process of instituting the major. Student demand had been consistent for years, he said.
